CANTONA COMPARISONS
The Dutchman Robin van Persie has been compared to the former United great Eric Cantona by the manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Eric Cantona is widely regarded as one of the best players who has represented Manchester United in the illustrious history of the club. Even though Robin van Persie still has a long way to go before matching the success of the enigmatic Frenchman, Ferguson believes that he has a lot of similar attributes to Cantona. Van Persie was brought into the club by Ferguson £ 24 million and he has so far been excellent.
He has already scored 15 goals in all competitions for the club, while most of them have been extremely crucial. In the last two weeks alone, he has helped Manchester United get three points in the matches against Manchester city and Sunderland. Cantona was hugely successful for Manchester United, but many doubted his ability to perform on the pitch when he signed for the club. This was also the similar case with Robin van Persie due to his injury problems and age. This led to the comparison between the two players by Sir Alex Ferguson in a recent interview. Ferguson has also said that Wayne Rooney should also chip in with his share of goals.
“He has got a similar profile to Eric in terms of age and maturity. He had a great spell at Arsenal so there is no issue with him needing to settle into the Premier League. He came from one big club to another big club and he is an established international. All these things in his profile suited us perfectly. I think it is happening, the attacking aspect of our game has definitely improved and of course he has weighed in with 15 goals,” said Ferguson, whose sit top of the Premier league.
